Alright, so hear me out. I know the idea of these doughnuts sounds interesting. You may be wondering if maple doughnuts and bacon are really the yummiest combination. But you need to put any thoughts of doubt aside. We already know that maple and bacon together is a delicious combination. So adding bacon to an already delicious maple doughnut really isn’t a huge leap. I hesitated to test this recipe for a while. But after finally giving the doughnut a try, I knew I wanted to share the recipe. I used my maple doughnuts as a base and then added bacon as a topping. Such a simple, but yummy addition. The only place I know of personally that offers a bacon doughnut is Voodoo Doughnuts. They have a location in the Denver airport, and I know so many people adore that doughnut! I’m hoping you all can get behind this fun doughnut, too. My mom was excited and very into the idea. She loved the way they turned out. Ingredients
Melted coconut oil Vanilla extract Large eggs Maple syrup Milk Whole wheat pastry flour Baking powder Baking soda Ground cinnamon Ground cardamom Kosher salt Salted butter Maple syrup Powdered sugar Vanilla extract Cooked bacon
Kitchen Supplies:
6-cup Doughnut pan or 12-cup muffin pan Mixing bowl Prepared pan Small pot
These are the details
Step 1: the bacon Before you begin, you should start cooking the bacon. I actually love to bake the bacon instead of pan-frying. It’s much easier to make a big batch of bacon and a lot less messy. Bake the bacon on a parchment-lined baking sheet in a 400-degree oven until it’s super crispy. I recommend using high-quality bacon for the best flavor, I usually pick up uncured bacon from Whole Foods. Something thicker cut and without added sugar is best. Step 2: make the doughnut batter Since we’re all embracing healthier eating for the start of the new year, I knew I wanted to make these a little more wholesome than most doughnuts. Frying was out of the picture, for sure. I never mess with that. But for the batter, I tried to keep with wholesome ingredients. For the wet ingredients: melted coconut oil, vanilla, eggs, real maple syrup, and milk. I always use whole milk, but use what you drink at home. Step 3: the dry ingredients Now, for the dry ingredients: whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt. The warm spices really complement the salty bacon. No fancy ingredients, and hopefully all ingredients you already have in your pantry. Unlocking a new craving yet? Step 4: bake the doughnuts Ok, time to bake! Divide the batter between doughnut pans (or use cupcake pans). As the doughnuts bake, the kitchen will start to smell like sweet maple or maybe even maple and bacon if you’re also baking up the bacon at the same time. It’s one of the yummiest scents. Reminds me of a homey Sunday morning breakfast. Better than from a donut shop! This might become one of my favorite desserts… Step 5: the glaze The glaze was the reason I really wanted to make these doughnuts. I love a maple-glazed doughnut. I find them to be one of those doughnuts people often ignore, so I wanted to highlight them! The glaze is pretty simple, butter, real maple syrup, powdered sugar, and plenty of vanilla. Not too strong, not too sweet, but just right. Especially when dipped into or drizzled over warm maple doughnuts. Delicious! Looking for other baked doughnuts?
