When I’m entertaining, I like to serve unexpected drink recipes such as a pomegranate margarita, champagne punch, red white and blue Jello shots, margarita Jello shots and this fun and delicious blue margarita. You can never go wrong with a refreshing margarita on a hot day, but sometimes I like to mix things up a bit and serve a blue margarita for a fun twist. It has a more complex flavor than a regular margarita, as well as a striking look featuring the color blue.

Blue Margarita Ingredients

To make this recipe, you will need coarse sanding sugar, salt, tequila blanco (silver tequila), agave syrup, fresh lime juice and blue curacao. You can garnish the drink with lime slices and mint sprigs.

How Do You Make A Blue Margarita?

Start by making the salted rim. Place the salt and sugar on a small plate, then stir to combine. Dip the rim of a drinking glass or margarita glass in water, then place the rim onto the plate of sugar and salt. Twist the glass to coat the rim, then turn the cup upright. Place ice, tequila, agave syrup, lime juice and blue curacao in a cocktail shaker. Seal the shaker, then shake to combine. Add ice to the prepared glass, then strain the cocktail into the glass. Garnish with lime wedges and mint, then serve.

Tips For The Perfect Drink

Blue curacao is available in the alcohol aisle of most grocery stores, or at liquor stores. This liqueur has an orange flavor similar to triple sec. It contains both sweet and bitter oranges which gives it a more complex flavor. This recipe calls for a cocktail shaker. If you don’t own a shaker, you can use a mason jar instead. I like to use coarse sanding sugar on the rim of my glass for a more elegant presentation. Regular granulated sugar will also work well. Use freshly squeezed lime juice for the best results. This recipe makes one drink. You can easily change the recipe if you’re serving a crowd by adjusting the number of servings in the recipe card. The ingredient amounts will automatically recalculate.

Flavor Variations

This blue margarita is delicious as-is, but you can change up some of the ingredients to suit your tastes.

Alcohol: You can substitute mezcal for tequila. If you can’t find blue curacao, you can use Cointreau or Grand Marnier, although you will also need to add some blue food coloring if you go this route. Juice: Instead of lime juice, try using fresh orange juice, or a blend of both orange and lime juice. Garnishes: Feel free to add extra garnishes such as maraschino cherries, an orange slice or cut a lime wheel instead of a lime wedge.

Everyone is sure to love these blue margaritas. It’s a great way to enjoy this classic drink, but with a unique and unexpected twist on a traditional margarita.
