Chocolate dipped Oreos look so fancy, but they couldn’t be any easier to make! I love to gift chocolate covered Oreos around the holidays along with homemade peppermint patties and crock pot candy.

Chocolate Covered Oreos Ingredients

To make chocolate covered Oreos you will need Oreo cookies, candy melts and sprinkles. These make fantastic holiday treats! If you want more Christmas treats check out my favorite Christmas candy recipes like peanut brittle, peppermint bark and rocky road fudge.

How Do You Make Chocolate Covered Oreos?

To make this chocolate covered Oreos recipe, start by placing candy melts in a microwave safe bowl. Heat the melts in 30 second increments until they melt. Stir the melted chocolate until smooth. Dip your Oreos into the melted chocolate with a fork until they are enrobed. Set the cookies on a sheet of parchment paper on a sheet pan or baking sheet. Add sprinkles to the cookies and let them cool to room temperature. Once they cookies are dry, serve and enjoy them.

Why Use Candy Melts Instead Of Chocolate Chips?

This recipe uses candy melts because they’re much easier to work with than chocolate chips. Candy melts create a smooth, thin coating that’s more like what you’d get at a chocolate shop. Chocolate chips are more likely to create a super thick shell that doesn’t have that smooth finish. The other reason I use candy melts is because you don’t have to temper them. If you use real chocolate, you need to temper the chocolate or when it dries you’ll have gray streaks all over the place which is not so pretty. Candy melts don’t produce that same gray “bloom” so you can store your chocolate covered Oreos for weeks and not worry about them losing their shiny finish.

Tips For The Perfect Chocolate Covered Oreos

Be sure to scrape all the excess chocolate off the bottom of your Oreos so that the chocolate won’t pool and create a “foot” at the bottom of your cookies. After you dip the cookies, tap the cookie against the side of the bowl so that excess chocolate drips off. Put sprinkles on the cookies while they are still warm so the sprinkles stick to the cookies. If your candy melts start to thicken up a bit, simply return them to the microwave and heat for another 10-15 seconds.

I love to hand out chocolate covered Oreos around the holidays as gifts for friends and teachers. I package them up in cellophane bags or gift tins and my kids deliver them around town. Everyone is always so impressed that we made them ourselves!

Flavor Variations

While these chocolate covered Oreos are fantastic, you can change the recipe to suit your taste:

Oreos: I use a mix of both chocolate and vanilla Oreos. You can really use any flavor variety you like here, peanut butter Oreos or double stuf Oreos would also be great choices. Holidays: You can change up the sprinkles depending on the time of year. I always make a Christmas version for the holidays. You can make cookies for Easter, Valentine’s Day, Halloween or any other holiday. Toppings: You could sprinkle on the cookies finely chopped almonds, walnuts or pecans. You could also sprinkle on the cookies crushed candy canes for Christmas.

Chocolate dipped Oreos are great for so many different occasions – think wedding favors, birthday parties, classroom events and more! It’s a treat that’s always welcome at any gathering.
