It’s been so long since I shared a simple cookie bar. But with Halloween right around the corner, I figured now was the perfect time. We don’t get trick-or-treaters up here where we are, it’s a little too rural. Asher goes into Frisco where she goes to school and where the businesses on Main Street hand out candy. But she never brings much, if any, home. In general, we really don’t eat candy, and I don’t usually love using candy in my baking recipes....

I love a good rice pilaf, and this mushroom and onion version is my very favorite! It’s so easy to make and even my kids devour it. I often serve this rice as a side dish for slow cooker chicken or brown sugar pork chops. Rice and mushrooms seem to be two very popular foods in my house. It’s why I came up with this mushroom rice, because I always have the ingredients on hand, making it a super easy dish to whip up....

Here is a recipe for simple festive recipe – Nei Appam. This is the sweet version of the usual kara paniyaram. I usually use my idli/dosa batter to make spicy kuzhi paniyarams. This sweet paniyaram however requires some prior preparation, although it is very easy. Soft, fluffy, dark brown appams oozing of cardamom and ghee flavors make it irresistible to stop eating these beauties 🙂 Traditionally, these nei appams are made with few core ingredients – raw rice, jaggery, banana, cardamom powder and ghee....

All of them. Plus, I do think that today calls for chocolate, but then again I was raised to think that everyday calls for at least a little chocolate. Fridays though? Those are double chocolate days. So my week. Let me tell you a little about it. It’s been filled with barn decisions. Well, I guess so was last week, but it’s all exciting and a little nerve-racking at the same time....

As we inch deeper into fall, our weather is steadily getting cooler, and the days are already becoming so much shorter! Halloween is almost here, then suddenly, we’re in the coziest season of the year! Things are always busy, but this time of year is especially crazy (in the best way)! With the sun setting early, time in the kitchen is limited, leaving even less time to create a decent meal after work....

Over the years I’ve made a lot of recipes with my Thanksgiving leftovers, but this turkey and potato dumpling bowl of soup is without a doubt my favorite. That might be a little bold, but this bowl of incredibly creamy and flavorful turkey and dumplings is SO GOOD. It’s the perfect cold-weather dinner to warm up to after a day of decking the halls, cutting down the Christmas tree…and maybe even some Black Friday shopping too…although personally, I much prefer Cyber Monday....

Monday opened faced tomato and goat cheese sandwich…with hot bacon vinaigrette. Insert all the emojis with giant heart eyes now please. And that’s mostly due to the following three ingredients, goat cheese, heirloom tomatoes, and bacon (and normally I am not one to get overly excited about bacon)....

We finally have snow here! This has been the weirdest December I’ve ever seen. We’ve had very little snowfall and back to back days of sunshine. Usually by this time of year we have full snow cover and more snowy days than sunny. But this year has just been so strange. I’m excited to report that we have a couple days of snow in the forecast. Snowy cold days mean soup!...

Today’s recipe is a classic breakfast in South India – Poori. Served with a simple potato curry (Kezhangu), Poori Kezhangu is quite famous. I have fond memories of Poori from my childhood days. Mostly on Sundays, our Amma would set out to make Poori for breakfast. The sister and I would help her in rolling the dough into small circles. Amma would spread newspapers around us and we could make whatever mess we wanted to 🙂 Dad would be helping Amma with the frying and once done, we all would sit down together to devour the tasty Pooris....

Just like chocolate, I was brought up to adore crepes. Typically, my mom would always be all about ice cream, but since I started making them, and letting my imagination run a little wild, we’ve realized that savory are just as delicious as the sweet! So, on a totally random note, lets talk about colleges. My younger brother is looking into colleges to transfer to for next year (he has been attending Colorado Mountain College online) and so far he has the University of South Carolina on his list....

Yet another Biryani recipe. A simple one this time – Pudina/Mint biryani. Mint is one of the essential herbs to make Biriyani. In fact, a biriyani isnt a biriyani if not for mint. It brings in such a fresh flavour to the rice and makes biryani what is it. I always have a bunch of mint/Pudina and coriander in my kitchen. I really cannot resist a fresh green batch of these fresh green herbs....

Of late this blog seems to be an irony for everything I used to hate as a kid. As far as I can remember, I never used to like tangy food. No raw mangoes, no raw tamarind, no gooseberries and nothing that every one of my friends loved. I had (and still have) a very strong sweet tooth and sweets were my thing. On the other hand, my sister used to love sour, tangy stuff....

Smoothies are a great way to get extra nutrition into your family – this delicious raspberry smoothie is full of protein, fiber and vitamins! My older girls are pretty good about eating their fruits and veggies, but my youngest can be a challenge. She’d live off granola bars if I let her! I try to get more nutrition into her with things like smoothies, and this raspberry smoothie recipe is one of our favorites!...

With cauliflower and lots and lots of cheese! Guys, this dip? It’s like eating one giant pile of cauliflower…. Covered in cheesy white pizza! It’s the healthier version of white pizza dip, but you don’t even realize it. Really, you don’t. Yep, you guessed it, even the brothers ate it. They ate cauliflower! Craziness. Of course, they had no clue, but they ate it and that in itself is practically a miracle....
