Fruit Mixer or Fruit Mixture is a popular street food in Tamilnadu and it can be found in every juice shop. It is the best summer drink and the taste of this mixed fruit juice differs as we move from one region to another within Tamilnadu.
Pazharasam
Pazham means fruit in Tamil and Rasam means Juice. In short Pazharasam can be transliterated to Fruit Juice. It is far from any mixed fruit juices that we get packaged. Fruit Mixture or Fruit Mixer is made with many seasonal fruits and that’s why it tastes different seasons. Between the many juice shops, the taste of this juice is not the same too.
Seasonal Fruit Mixture
Being the most popular summer drink, it is made primarily with Mukkani (Maa, Pala, Vazhai) – the holy trio of Mango, Jackfruit and Banana. Each of these three fruits are very sweet by nature and hence we don’t add any additional sugar in this recipe.
Ingredients
Although you can use any fruits available to make this pazharasam, below are the best choices. Mango – the king of all fruits, highly seasonal and available only in summer. Jack Fruit – adds to the flavor and texture of the smoothie Banana – traditionally in South Tamilnadu, Red Banana is added which gives good body to this juice Papaya – not very usual to add to smoothies, but in this South Indian mixed fruit juice this adds a good texture Grapes – Paneer drakshai (dark colored grapes with seeds) are added to give color, taste and texture Melons – add any type of melon as per availability and preference but mostly musk melon is preferred Pomegranate & Apple – traditionally, none of the expensive fruits are added unless they are over-ripe but while making at home, add these fruits depending on preference Note that there are no citrus fruits are added to Pazharasam. You can add any other fruits as per availability but know that the color and texture of the juice highly depends on the fruits added.
Serving Suggestions
As we add ripe fruits to make this fruit mixer, there is no needed to add any sugar. Traditionally, nannari syrup made from sarasaparilla roots is added to this juice. It has cooling medicinal properties which helps a lot during peak summers. The quantity that I mentioned should be good for 2-4 people depending on the size of the serving glasses. How to make Pazharasam
Add 2 Bananas Chopped, 1 Apple Chopped, ½ cup Chopped Papaya, ½ cup Pomegranate Pearls, 1 Guava Chopped, 2 Sapota/Chikko Chopped and 2 tablespoon Nannari Syrup into the blender.
Add 2 cups Water and blend the juice for 2-3 mins to the desired consistency. It should be not very smooth and be slightly textural.
Drain the juice and strain it if required (to remove seeds).
Pour the Fruit mixture juice onto serving glasses.
Top off with ¼ cup cold Badam Milk for added taste and flavor.
Serve immediately.
Recipe Notes
Add any seasonal fruits as per availability and preference. Don’t add any citrus fruits to this juice. Traditionally this juice is made at once and kept chilled until it is ready to be served. To keep it vegan, don’t add the badam milk at end.
