When I’m looking to surprise my family with an impressive meal, I turn to breakfast recipes such as a Dutch baby pancake, fluffy overnight yeast waffles, lemon sour cream waffles and these beautiful and delicious red velvet waffles. Red velvet treats are always a hit, whether it’s a red velvet heart cake, red velvet brownies, red velvet cookies or these delicious red velvet waffles. This is the perfect festive breakfast for Valentine’s Day!

Red Velvet Waffles Ingredients

To make this recipe, you will need all purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa powder, salt, granulated sugar, buttermilk, eggs, butter, vanilla extract and red food coloring. For the icing, you will need cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract. You can garnish the waffles with fresh berries and mini chocolate chips.

How Do You Make Red Velvet Waffles?

Prepare the waffle batter by whisking together the dry ingredients of flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, granulated sugar and salt in a large bowl. Add the wet ingredients of buttermilk, eggs, butter and vanilla extract to the bowl. Stir until the batter is just combined. Add the food coloring and stir once more. Preheat a waffle iron, and brush it with oil or coat with cooking spray. Pour some batter into the waffle maker. Cook until the waffle is lightly browned, then repeat the process with the rest of the batter. While the waffles are cooking, make your cream cheese icing. Use a mixer to beat butter and cream cheese together until light and fluffy. Add the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract, then beat until you have a smooth frosting. Drizzle the icing over each waffle, then add berries and chocolate chips and serve.

Tips For The Perfect Waffles

I prefer to use gel food coloring because it provides a more vibrant color without adding any extra liquid to the batter. I typically use Americolor Super Red. Leftover waffles will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Store them separate from the icing, and reheat in the toaster. You can also freeze the waffles for up to 2 months. Different waffle makers cook at different rates. Mine typically produces crispy waffles in about 6 minutes, but just be aware cook times may vary so keep an eye on the first waffle! I use a disposable piping bag or a large freezer bag with the tip cut off to neatly drizzle the icing over the waffles.

Flavor Variations

This recipe is delicious as-is, but you can customize some of the ingredients to suit your tastes.

Waffle Batter: If you prefer waffles with more of a chocolate flavor, you can stir some chocolate chips into the batter. Toppings: You can use other types of toppings other than cream cheese icing. Some great options include whipped cream, vanilla Greek yogurt, shaved white chocolate or white chocolate chips, or add some red sprinkles.

Your whole family will love these red velvet waffles. It’s the best breakfast treat for a special occasion!
